Ray nets 17 in road victory

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – McDaniel opened up an eight-point lead midway through the second half before holding on to top Muhlenberg 57-54 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.

Isaac Ray (Fredericksburg, Pa./Northern Lebanon) led three starters in double figures for the Green Terror (8-7, 4-4 CC) with 17 points that included hitting four of his team's nine 3-pointers.

Brandon LaRose led the Mules (8-5, 4-4 CC) with 11 points and seven rebounds.

Trailing 11-10, Kevin Yrizarry (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) hit a layup with 7:14 remaining in the first half to spark a 12-2 run over the next 3 minutes, 54 seconds to open up a 22-13 lead. Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) and Ray capped the run with back-to-back triples.

Muhlenberg, however, tallied the final seven points of the half to close to within 22-20 at the break.

The lead fluttered between two and six points before Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) drained a trey with 14:46 to play, extending the lead to 35-27.

A James McGovern (Glenside, Pa./St. Joseph's Prep) triple kept it an eight-point game with 10:18 to play before Jon Schreer answered with a 3-pointer of his own to make it a 43-38 game.

A Schreer layup capped a 9-2 stretch that made it a one-point game with 4:41 on the clock.

A pair of Ray 3-pointers over the next two minutes stretched the lead back to five before he canned two free throws with 1:50 to play, stretching the advantage to 56-49.

LaRose hit a pair of pair of free throws with 50 ticks remaining to make it a one-possession game and the hosts had a chance to tie the game in the final 20 seconds but could not get a good look at the basket.

McWilliams finished with 14 points and four steals while Perugino added 10 points and five assists. Yrizarry chipped in nine points and seven rebounds.

The Green Terror returns to action at Gettysburg on Wednesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
