Dickinson escapes with victory

Red Devils hit in waning seconds to defeat McDaniel, 62-61

CARLISLE, Pa. – Brian Gerney finished with 13 points, including the game-winning layup, to lead Dickinson to a 62-61 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory over McDaniel on Wednesday.

Devon Lesniak (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) led all scorers, pacing the Green Terror (11-9, 8-5 CC) with 18 points.

Matt Dolan added 12 points for the Red Devils (10-10, 8-5 CC), who ended up on the winning side of a back-and-forth affair over the waning minutes to force a three-way deadlock for second place after Johns Hopkins defeated Gettysburg.

Trailing 42-39, Adam Honig hit three free throws and Logan Furr canned a 3-pointer to give the Red Devils a three-point lead but Michael Jarboe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana) snapped the 6-0 burst with a trey to to even the game with 11:29 showing.

A single Evan Pupelis (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) free throw gave the Green Terror a one-point lead but two straight baskets from Tucker Landy and a Gerney layup gave Dickinson a 51-46 lead with 7:37 to play.

Trailing 56-48, Tyler Rudd (Glen Burnie, Md./Glen Burnie) bookended a Woody Butler (Smithsburg, Md./Middletown) layup with a pair of 3-pointers to knot the game before Lesniak hit a layup to put the visitors on top by two but was called for an offensive foul to put Dolan on the line for a 1-and-1.

Dolan hit both attempts to even the game but Pupelis hit the first of two free throws for a one-point advantage at the 2:12 mark.

With 1:13 on the clock, Dolan drove the lane and hit a layup to put the hosts on top by one.
Out of a timeout in the frontcourt with 1:02 showing, Marcus Dyson (Scotch Plains, N.J./Union Catholic) hit a turnaround hook shot in the lane with 48.7 seconds to play for a one-point advantage.

After a Dickinson turnover and two Red Devil fouls, the Green Terror missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 25.7 seconds showing.

Dickinson called a timeout in the frontcourt with 20.7 seconds to play, Gerney drove the left side of the lane and hit a layup for a one-point lead with 2.6 seconds showing.

The Green Terror's last-second attempt at the horn fell short, giving the Red Devils the season sweep.

Trailing 2-0 when Lesniak hit a jumper 1:24 into the game, Chris Heine responded eight seconds later with a pair of free throws to spark a 10-0 run that gave the hosts an eight-point advantage with 14:07 on the first-half clock.

With his team still down eight, Lesniak hit another jumper with 11:27 showing to spark a 9-1 stretch to even the game at 18-all when Dyson hit a pair of free throws at the 8:56 mark.
Greg Nicol put Dickinson back on top by two with a layup on the hosts' next possession.

A Dyson second-chance layup knotted the game at 20-all before Rudd nailed a 3-pointer in the corner to give McDaniel the advantage with 6:12 remaining in the half.

Dolan trimmed the deficit to one but a pair of Christopher Cowles (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) free throws after a steal-and-break attempt and five straight points from Lesniak, including a kickout 3-pointer gave the Green Terror a 30-22 lead, forcing a Red Devil timeout with 3:01 on the clock.

Jarboe hit two free throws to cap a 10-0 run before a pair of Chris Barsanti baskets around a Brian Gerney bucket trimmed the deficit to 32-28 at the break.

A Dyson jumper on the team's first possession of the second half stretched the lead to six before five points from Gerney keyed a 7-1 burst that knotted the game at 35-all with 17:41 to play.

Jarboe responded to Gerney's triple with a trey of his own to give the visitors a three-point cushion.

Rudd finished with 13 points while Dyson added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Haverford on Saturday. Game time is 3 p.m.
